Product Description

The Pacific is an epic 10-part miniseries that delivers a realistic portrait of WWII’s Pacific Theatre as seen through the intertwined odysseys of three U.S. Marines – Robert Leckie, John Basilone and Eugene Sledge. The extraordinary experiences of these men and their fellow Marines take them from the first clash with the Japanese in the haunted jungles of Guadalcanal, through the impenetrable rain firests of Cape Gloucester, across the blasted coral strongholds of Peleliu, up the black sand terraces of Iwo Jima, through the killing fields of Okinawa, to the triumphant, yet uneasy, return home after V-J Day. The viewer will be immersed in combat through the intimate perspective of this diverse, relatable group of men pushed to the limit in battle both physically and psychologically against a relentless enemy unlike any encountered before.

Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg have long since shown that they can spin a good World War II yarn. But while their previous collaborations (Saving Private Ryan, which they starred in and directed, respectively, and Band of Brothers, for which they were part of the producing team) were set in Europe, The Pacific is their first look at the conflict with the Japanese on the other side of the world–and the two executive producers, along with an outstanding cast, an able crew, and a slew of top-notch writers and directors, have done a superb job. In making a 10-episode HBO miniseries (on five discs, with a sixth containing bonus material) that combines real events and participants with other dramatic elements newly created for the project, the filmmakers took a personal, experiential approach, focusing in particular on three marines, all of them real individuals: Robert Leckie (played by James Badge Dale), an aspiring writer who sees his first action at Guadalcanal, falls in love while on leave in Australia, and later suffers serious war wounds; John Balisone (Jon Seda), who performs heroically at Guadalcanal, earns a Medal of Honor, and is then sent home to help sell war bonds, only to return to action at Iwo Jima; and Eugene Sledge (Joseph Mazzello), who enlists later than the others, but not too late to witness and take part in some unimaginable horrors (books written by Sledge and Leckie about their experiences were used as source material for the miniseries). Of course, no one who’s never been in combat can understand what it’s really like, but through these three, and other men as well, we get some idea of the debilitating effects of war, both physical and psychological, and how those who managed to survive it might cope. As Leckie would write, “There are things men can do to one another that are sobering to the soul. It is one thing to reconcile these things with God, but another to square them with yourself.”

A number of episodes depict the characters at home, on leave, or otherwise away from the field of battle, but the greatest impact comes from the extraordinarily powerful fighting scenes in which the marines–exhausted, half-starving, riddled with malaria, and enduring the appalling conditions (from extreme heat to relentless, torrential downpours) of an impenetrable, unforgiving jungle–battle an implacable, fanatical foe who would much rather die than surrender or be taken prisoner. A sequence in Part Five, when we’re with Sledge as he lands at Peleliu for his first real action, is especially gripping; battles at night and in the rain at Cape Gloucester in Part Four, on Iwo Jima in Part Eight, and on Okinawa in Part Nine are also wrenching, but really, all the fighting sequences manage to convey the sheer, visceral terror the men experienced. To the filmmakers’ credit, a number of real WWII veterans are on hand to share their memories, both in a 49-minute featurette on disc 6 and during the short introductions to each episode narrated by Hanks. Other extras include a 22-minute “making of” piece and a brief but interesting description of the cultural differences that made the conflict between the Japanese and the Americans even more brutal than it might have been. Kudos also go to the packaging and design of the boxed set; the menus are easily navigable, offering a synopsis of each episode. –Sam Graham

For anyone interested in the Pacific theatre- this is an epic story of 3 marines, their comrades and their sacrifice against a fearless enemy. The level of detail and battle sequences are amazing. The amphibious landings and the hell thats thrown at these guys is unthinkable. The fact that the Pacific war isn’t covered enough, makes this educational for some and intriguing to everyone. Thanks to Clint Eastwoods great movies(Letters From Iwo Jima, Flags Of Our Fathers) and Speilberg/Hanks The Pacific, we are starting to get some great coverage in this area. Of more importance, the men who gave so much are getting the recognition they deserve.

I have read some of the other reviews here and I can’t understand the anti- reviews. This is not Band Of Brothers Part 2, its not trying to be that series. This series is much more personal. We get to see how bad the fighting was and how it changes these men. This series focuses on 3 marines, instead of a platoon of guys and their leaders. Band Of Brothers is awesome, everyone knows that. BOB was also 8 years ago and its had its day in the sun. We all have it on dvd and will enjoy it the rest of our lives. I think some people have let the past 8 years of BOB marinate in their minds. Instead of coming into this series with an open mind, people were ready to pick it apart, because they love BOB so much. I think once this set comes out on blu ray and you can spend a weekend enjoying what a great series it is, you will see that it stands on its own. I heard one guy after the first episode say ” its slow, I hope it will pick up” . The first episode of BOB was boot camp and getting ready for D-day- that was a slow episode, but very enjoyable- just like this episode one. But in this series the marines are already on Guadalcanal and the action has begun in earnest.Makes no sense.

One of many aspects I enjoy about The Pacific is the time the soldiers spend away from the battlefield. I think they do a great job showing whats on these guys minds, what they have to fight for and how their fate on the battlefield effects so many. Theres an episode where they are stationed in Australia and you can see how some Aussies can’t wait for them to leave. While others fall in love with the soldiers or welcome them into their lives. Its a dynamic of war that is easier to cover in a series this long.

The Marines weren’t just fighting a fearless, well trained enemy- they were fighting the jungle as well. Which is also well covered in the series. I can’t imagine living in these conditions, let alone fighting the Japanese. The diseases and lack of proper supplies killed thousands of soldiers(on both sides), who didn’t have the chance to decide their fate on the field.

The acting is well done by the 3 main performers portraying Basilone, Leckie and Sledge. The chemistry between Jon Seda(Basilone) and Annie Parrise(Lena) is hard to find. I thought the episode where they meet, fall in love , marry and seperate because of Basilone’s Iwo Jima mission was one of the best in the series. It seemed like every episode was better than the previous. It kept getting better. There are many episodes and moments that make this great. The 3 episodes that encompass the Pelieu battle are intense, brutal and realistic for battle. I feel like the brutality and ruthless battle of the Pacific war is captured very well here. This warfare is much different from the European theatre. The Japanese won’t surrender when the odds look grim like the Germans did countless times. It gives the viewer an idea of how savage the fighting in the Pacific would have been. There is a scene where the Marines are trying to cross an airfield- but the Japanese are waiting and ready. The following moments are above what we have seen in Saving Private Ryan for graphic war violence. For a good while its unrelenting. Another moment that will stay with you is when Sledge is on Okinawa- the last battle. He enters a small shelter to find a crying baby. When he looks around he finds a woman close to death. She wants him to kill her to end her pain, even putting his gun to her head. But he is done killing. Its a powerful moment. There are good hearted moments to find too. The episode where the Marines are in Australia is great. And the final episode finds the soldiers trying to make a life for themselves in post war America. Several find love and begin fresh. Leckie(James Dale)who earler in Australia lost love, finds love with the woman he had been writing too throughout the war. Although he never sends the letters- figuring he wouldn’t survive the war! The people who made the Island sets should be given praise too. The battlefields are very realistic.

The special features are definatley worth your time. The first section covers several marines with profiles lasting around 10 minutes per marine. Some of the interviews are from several years ago, when they were still alive. Its priceless archival footage of our countries heroes. There is a making of “The Pacific” feature that covers all the research that went into making th sets and recreating the battles. Extremely impressive! This is top shelf film making here. The final section covers the reasons for the savagery of both sides in this war. As well as helping some to understand the conflicts of cultures.

I highly recommend this series to those who want to see something great. Its not often we get a long historical series like this and to have one this well done is a treat.

This review is from: The Pacific (HBO Miniseries) [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)

First let me say that HBO, Steven Spielberg, and Tom Hanks deserve a standing ovation for making this epic piece of history. I just finished watching the last episode. Once I saw the first episode, I was mesmerized for the next 9 weeks! I scheduled everything on Sunday around watching “The Pacific”.
Outstanding acting, incredible cinematography, great music score, realism that is scary! I’m running out of superlatives to use! It’s not better, than BOB! It’s just as good and just as heart warming, and gut wrenching as BOB. Both of these historical mini-series deserve equal credit. Don’t let some of the reviews here influence your judgement not to watch it. Yes there are those that feel strongly about one or another, but I don’t believe that was anyone’s goal in making the Pacific. I believe, especially Tom Hanks, just has this compelling, passionate desire to put both theaters of WWII in the minds of both, those that served and those of us who have not. The mellow drama movies of post WWII lead many of us who did not serve, to think about WWII as a hero’s time in history. I would never discount any heroics which there are plenty to be seen, It’s just that both of these series, Band of Brothers, and The pacific, set the stage for us to all share in the reality of war. Some reviewers here have commented on how there feelings were evoked while watching, In a few words, I felt like I was there each week, and each week after watching an episode, I would look at there reality and think about my past week, good or bad and feel proud to be an American Citizen!

I’m an aging baby boomer, 64, and my Father, who is 88, and still with us, was a ambulance driver on the front lines in Germany, France, and a few other countries. My father also suffered from some of the mental duress from his time served. With this Memorial Day Holiday upon us very soon, I would like to say a very sincere, Thank You, to ALL who have served in ALL the wars that have helped make the United States of America a country I’m still proud of.

Mr. Spielberg, and Mr. Hanks, Please do what ever you can to bring more of these fine mini-series covering the Korean War, the Viet-Nam War, and both Iraq, and Afghanistan Wars. They deserve your serious passion, commitment, and wonderful talents! My Mother was an English WWar II Bride, so let’s just say Hip, Hip, Hooray!

I’ve already ordered my Blue-Ray release of “The Pacific”

This review is from: The Pacific (HBO Miniseries) (DVD)

I enjoyed bits and pieces of this mini-series and from my readings of E.B. Sledge and historians of the Pacific battles I thought it accurately portrayed the combat experiences of the Marines in that theater. I found the brief strategic overviews narrarated by Hanks before each episode to be helpful, and I thought the combat scenes and the portrayal of the Marines’ misery was well done, but on the whole I found the mini-series unsettling in a number of ways and I don’t think I’d watch it again.

Most importantly, I feel the format of the series was disconnected. In attempting to weave together the stories of three Marines who weren’t necessarily fighting shoulder-to-shoulder, we get glimpses of each Marine and are then moved on to the next one. The effect this had on me was such that I’d begin to care about one of them but would then be quickly shifted away to the next one. So I found I really didn’t care about any of the characters until E.B. Sledge heads off to combat, which is several episodes in. Since I’d read his excellent book I’d already had an interest in seeing his story played out on screen, but when the story moved from Sledge and back to the States for a Basilone episode I found myself a little annoyed. (To be fair the creators were moving through episodes chronologically so by default something like this is bound to happen, but in my opinion it did more to hurt the flow than help it.)

Compounding this I felt a number of the episodes really slowed the tempo of the series down (e.g., the leave in Australia episode, the Leckie convalescing episode, and most of the Basilone falling in love episode). Here again we’d be thrust into one situation (intense combat) then rapidly shifted to an entirely different one (frolicking with Australian women), or vice versa. I understand that the creators wanted to portray the experiences of these specific men, but just as I started to really feel cohesion amongst the fighting men in the jungles or beaches, we’d be thrown back into these individualized stories, which, again, I had trouble caring about. Additionally, I think this format led to stilted dialogue since the characters themselves could never really find their groove within the series. I often found myself tuning out of conversations because I just wasn’t invested.

If one were to insist on comparing this series with ‘Band of Brothers’ I would say that ‘The Pacific’ lacked the cohesion of that series – mainly for the reason that in ‘Band of Brothers’ we followed one unit from the beginning of their war to the end of their war, which was geographically confined to a relatively small Europe; whereas in ‘The Pacific’ we more followed individual men across locations which were often separated by thousands of miles of ocean. This geographic separation coupled with the constantly shifting protagonists/backdrops really threw me for a loop.

Finally, I am no wilting flower but parts of the series were about as grim as war movies get. This is by no means a knock on the series – as I believe these scenes were accurately portrayed as the men wrote them – but it added to my general sense of discomfort. I have only sympathy for the men who were asked to fight in those horrendous conditions, and to see this fighting portrayed on screen was powerful indeed. I’m glad the creators undertook this effort to honor these men, and I’m glad I watched the series once to gain an appreciation of the veterans who fought in the Pacific; but mostly because of the cohesion issues mentioned above I’m not sure I’d want to view the series again.

“Shaped, classic !!!!!!!” 2010-10-26
By Movie lovers!
For the first time, the contact time of the film is shaped in the cable channel HBO. Was the feeling that the original horror film can also be loaded onto the space! This film in terms of picture and sound created by the indignant on all created scientific films past precedent! to-market when the second episode, of course I went to see it the first time, after reading, I feel only a surprise! shaped this second episode I saw a total of four times in the theater, and the remaining is to bring friends to see it three times, each time to the end of the film, the cinema’s audience, like me, the excitement, applaud! So when VIDEO launch comes, of course, not running out of my collection of it! However, in the third, released in Episode IV, I felt a little disappointed! turned out to be for the director! so this whole story coherence, and coordination is not always felt this is the only fly in the ointment place! but Finally, the heroine finally returned to Earth! can be considered for this story painted on a perfect symbol!! Now, the film has finally launched the BLU-RAY version! I was looking forward to!

“They No Longer Call It Quadrilogy?” 2010-10-26
By ILoveTheUSA (Taxachusetts)
Ha ha they don’t use a made up word any more to describe this box set. I own the Quadrilogy and the film looks pretty good already on regular dvd so why drop the 90.00 on this? I don’t think there is anything new to this set that is worth it compared to the old one. If you don’t own the original box set then this is a great purchase. Too bad the final movie was such a stupid production but the other movies make up for it.

“”No One Can Hear You Scream in Space” or in your own home!” 2010-10-26
By Peter A. Gemmer (Space Center, FL)
Anybody who saw “Alien” and didn’t think it was the greatest sci-fi film of all times, hasn’t got a clue what it takes to makes a bone-chilling, skin-crawlingg, movie. Not since the original “Halloween” movie-score, did sounds cause your skin to ripple like this did. I studied American short stories in college and this story-characters-setting really came to a frightening reality. This film can NOT be missed by anyone who is a fan of great sci-fi. For those of you who did not like “Alien”, you probably like the rubber suited Godzilla or think Mighty Mouse could put up a good fight with Superman (even tho you know Mighty Mouse is a cartoon and Superman is a real man). “Aliens” definitely had more action. The first VHS release was disjointed by their editing, but the first DVD release added 18 deleted minutes which made the movie better. I hope it is the the same in Blu-ray as I have not yet played it. 3 & 4 were OK, and I hope they made lots of money, but the effects were gone, and the frightening scenes were rather tame. “Alien” and “Aliens” are a must see!!

“UK Version Confirmed as Region ABC (all region compatible)” 2010-10-23
By Stratman (Ma, USA)
Multiple sources have confirmed, via hands on, that the UK version of this is indeed region free and will play on US region 1 players.
And that includes all the extra materials as well. Quality for the 1st 2 films is supposedly outstanding. Quality for the 2nd two are close, but
not quite as impressive as the first 2. Overall, people are impressed. The UK box, including shipping to the US, is around $[...].
Also be aware that the UK box is built differently than the US version. The UK is a fold out design similar to the Quadriliogy box set.

Product Description

The fun, the fashion, the friendship: Sex and the City 2 brings it all back and more as Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker), Samantha (Kim Cattrall), Charlotte (Kristin Davis) and Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) come together to take another bite out of The Big Apple– and beyond–in a hilarious sequel. What happens after you say “I do?” Life is everything the ladies ever wished it would be, but it wouldn’t be Sex in the City if life didn’t hold a few more surprises. After all, sometimes you just have to get away with the girls.

Amazon.com

The four glitziest ladies ever to hit Manhattan as a single force–Carrie, Samantha, Miranda, and Charlotte–are back, fabulous as ever, in Sex and the City 2. They may be older, and even a little wiser, but the pulls of love, lust, careers, and a pair of well-turned stilettos are still the focus of this Fab Four. As the women gamely face the prospect of aging–children, menopause, glass ceilings, and, in Carrie’s opinion a fate worse than death–domesticity–they still manage to sparkle with the banter and great outfits that made the HBO series and the first film such hits. Sex and the City 2 opens with Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker), Samantha (Kim Cattrall), Miranda (Cynthia Nixon), and Charlotte (Kristin Davis) at the wedding of two of the foursome’s favorite gay male friends, Stanford (Willie Garson) and Anthony (Mario Cantone). The wedding itself pulls out all the stops–in the true spirit of Sex and the City–and is one of the highlights of the film. From the no-holds-barred décor, including live swans, to the gay men’s chorus singing show tunes while the guests arrive, the event is on the far side of over the top. As the guests settle into their seats, Miranda whispers, “Could this wedding be any gayer?” and as if on command, out comes Liza Minnelli, playing herself, to officiate. (Minnelli’s performance is unexpectedly splendid, and her “wedding song” will wow all her fans–gay, straight, married, single.) Yet beneath the luscious glamour and the really bad hats (oh, Carrie, you should have resisted that harlequin feathered crown), the heroines are struggling with the not-so-glamorous realities of their lives. Charlotte and Harry (the always delightful and dependable Evan Handler) have two demanding young daughters–and a nanny from Ireland whose braless voluptuousness puts new meaning in the phrase “Irish spring,” and who may be threatening their marriage. Miranda, ever the focused career gal, is getting nowhere fast at her law firm. And Carrie, now married to Mr. Big (Chris Noth), is chafing at the cozy staying-in and lying-low that she thinks spell death to romance. (It should be noted that vixen Samantha is still game for walking on the wild side. At the wedding she meets a handsome straight guy and asks him what he does for a living. “I lay concrete,” he says. Samantha: “That sounds promising.”) And for once there are no easy, glib answers to the real-life problem of the four stars, and Sex and the City 2 lets the characters actually grow up, at least a little. Which doesn’t mean their fashions aren’t fabulous. The film is also chock-a-block with great cameos, including Miley Cyrus, Project Runway’s Tim Gunn, and Penélope Cruz. And longtime fans of the TV series will be happy to hear that Smith Jerrod (Jason Lewis), Samantha’s onetime flame, and Aidan (John Corbett), who once stole Carrie’s heart, also make appearances. Sex and the City 2 is frothier than a shaken bottle of Champagne, and goes down as smoothly as a couple of appletinis. So fans, drink up! –A.T. Hurley

“Loved SATC2!” 2010-10-21
By Sarah Shopper
I really loved this movie and the first one as well as the series. I totally recommend this movie to any and all SATC fans! I am also giving this a 5 star rating to offset the negative reviews. I don’t feel the need to take every little piece of the movie apart and give it a poor review because it was a great addition to watching the SATC girls lives continue to unfold and go along with them on the ride of fun, drama, and adventure!

“Fun with a little meaning on the side…” 2010-10-19
By D. Hinson (atlanta, ga usa)
I honestly cannot understand the drubbing this film got from some reviewers when it was released. SATC has always been primarily just a fun, guilty pleasure to me. Sure, there have been meaningful subplots to all the stories, but it is first and foremost a comedy. They pulled out all the stops for the opening wedding scene in this one, and it was a delight. Yes, it was a little cringe-worthy having Liza play a gay wedding, but c’mon, what movie starts with a big ‘ol gay valentine to the audience like this?! The audience in the theater at the sneak preview that I attended was, by and large, comprised of exquisitely dressed women. I felt like I was tagging along for the party, and was so happy to hear all of the ladies exploding with laughter when Minnelli came out and did “Single Ladies.” It set the tone for a great time at the movies…

As fluffy as the installments in the series and these two movies can be, there is always a lot of heart in each production. The storyline about how couples define their relationships really spoke to me. I’ve had a long-distance relationship for 13 years–due to circumstances, and am too well aware of how many people view my situation when I describe it. The equivalent of “How do you hold up?” greets nearly every conversation I have with people who have more traditional relationships. It was refreshing to see the SATC girls take on what defines a relationship–the two people having it!!

Let’s hope there will be a third installment of the movie series because SATC has always been, at its core, about bringing people together for fashion, laughter, and irreverence, with a side of wistfulness. I think maybe some people have begun to expect too much from our girls…let’s not try and make the series something that it never was!!

“So So:” 2010-10-18
By David J. Jordan Jr. (usa)
I watched this movie on a flight coming back from Rome in September, and it became apparent to me that Kim Cattrall’s character Samantha is the funniest!!! Kim has more charisma than the rest of the girls put together!!! While SJP was enjoyable in the TV version, she looks stiff and her acting is pretty boring, no emotion at all…. While I did laugh at a few spots, it is a pretty forgettable movie. FYI, watch this movie while your drinking!!!

“SATC2 falls flat and that’s not the cleavage” 2010-10-18
By Kevin (Los Angeles, CA)
I am not the person to review this movie. Perhaps you will enjoy a review from someone who disqualifies himself at the outset, doesn’t much like most of the characters and is bored by their bubble-brained conversations. I also know nothing about world-famous designers. The women are older and no more wiser.

The characters of “Sex and the City 2″ are flyweight bubbleheads living in a world which rarely requires three sentences in a row. Their defining quality is consuming things. They gobble food, fashion, houses, husbands, children, vitamins and freebies. They must plan their wardrobes on the phone, so often do they appear in different basic colors, like the plugs you pound into a Playskool workbench.

As we return to the trivialities of their lives for a sequel, marriage is the issue. The institution is affirmed in an opening sequence at a gay wedding in Connecticut that looks like a Fred Astaire production number gone horribly over budget. There’s a 16-man chorus in white formal wear, a pond with swans, and Liza Minnelli to perform the ceremony. Her religious or legal qualifications are unexplained. After the ceremony, she changes to a Vegas lounge outfit and is joined by two lookalike backups for a song and dance routine possibly frowned upon in some denominations.

Then it’s back to the humdrum married life of our gal Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker) and the loathsome Mr. Big (Chris Noth). Mr. Big speaks loudly enough to be heard mostly by himself, his most appreciative audience. And he never wants to leave the house at night, preferring to watch classic black-and-white movies on TV. This leads to a marital crisis. Carrie thinks they should talk more. But Carrie, Mr. Big has nothing to say. At least he’s provided you with a Manhattan apartment that looks like an Architectural Digest wet dream.

Brief updates. Miranda Hobbes (Cynthia Nixon) is a high-powered lawyer who is dissed by her male chauvinist pig boss. Samantha Jones (Kim Cattrall) is still a sexaholic slut. Charlotte York (Kristin Davis) has the two little girls she thought she wanted, but now discovers that they actually expect to be raised. Mothers, if you are reading, run this through your head. One little girl dips her hands in strawberry topping and plants two big handprints on your butt. You are on the cell to a girlfriend. How do you report this? You moan and wail out: “My vintage Valentino!” Any mother who wears her vintage Valentino while making muffin topping with her kids should be hauled up before the Department of Children and Family Services.

All of this is pretty thin gruel. The movie shows enterprise, and flies the entire cast away to the emirate of Abu Dhabi, where the girls are given a $22,000-a-night suite and matching Maybachs and butlers, courtesy of a sheik who wants to have a meeting with Samantha and talk about publicity for his hotel.

This sequence is an exercise in obscenely conspicuous consumption, in which the girls appear in so many different outfits they must have been followed to the Middle East by a luggage plane. I don’t know a whole lot about fashion, but I know something about taste, and these women spend much of the movie dressed in tacky, vulgar clothing. Carrie and Samantha also display the maximum possible boobage, oblivious to Arab ideas about women’s modesty. There’s more cleavage in this film than at a pro wrestler’s wedding.

And crotches, have we got crotches for you. Big close-ups of the girls themselves, and some of the bulgers they meet. And they meet some. They meet the Australian world cup team, for example, which seems to have left its cups at home. And then there’s the intriguing stranger Samantha meets at the hotel, whose zipper-straining arousal evokes the fury of an offended Arab guest and his wife.

Samantha is arrested for kissing on the beach, and there’s an uncomfortable scene in which the girls are menaced by outraged men in a public market, where all they’ve done is dress in a way more appropriate for a sales reception at Victoria’s Secret. They’re rescued by Arab women so well covered only their eyes are visible, and in private these women reveal that underneath the burkas they’re wearing Dior gowns and so forth. Must get hot.

The movie’s visual style is arthritic. The sitcom dialogue is shown by dutifully cutting back and forth to whoever is speaking. A sample of Carrie’s realistic dialogue in a marital argument: “You knew when I married you I was more Coco Chanel than coq au vin.” Carrie also narrates the film, providing useful guidelines for those challenged by its intricacies. Sample: “Later that day, Big and I arrived home.”

I am obliged to report that this film will no doubt be deliriously enjoyed by its fans, for the reasons described above. The sequel to the better first film and HBO show heads down the road to corniness, but not terribly bad if you’re into that sort of thing. Rent it before you make the decision to buy it without seeing it.

Product Description

Robert Rodriguez presents Predators, a bold new chapter in the Predator universe. Adrien Brody stars as Royce, a mercenary who reluctantly leads a group of elite warriors mysteriously brought together on a jungle planet. But when these cold-blooded human “predators” find themselves in all-out war against a new breed of alien Predators, it’s the ultimate showdown between hunter and prey.

Amazon.com

Executive producer Robert Rodriguez (Grindhouse, Spy Kids) is the driving force behind this energetic reboot of the popular Predator films, which pits the dreadlocked alien hunters against a rogues’ gallery of human antiheroes, led by a bulked-up Adrien Brody. The Oscar winner acquits himself nicely in the role of a gritty mercenary who finds himself stranded on a jungle planet with a host of criminals and professional killers (among them such scene-stealers as Walton Goggins and Danny Trejo), as well as a seemingly innocent doctor, well played by Topher Grace. They’ve been deposited there to serve as living targets for a horde of Predators–whose looks, designed by Gregory Nicotero and Howard Berger, are impressively varied and sleek–that use the planet as their private hunting grounds. Laurence Fishburne is also on hand as a soldier who has managed to survive for years in the jungle; he, Brody, and Grace do much to make the pulpy dialogue by Alex Litvak and Michael Finch (adapting a premise penned by Rodriguez in the mid-’90s) palatable. Likewise, Hungarian director Nimrod Antal (Vacancy) lends a great deal of atmosphere and Rodriguez-style momentum to the picture–perhaps more than necessary, since the end result is, like the 1987 original with Arnold Schwarzenegger, a fun B-movie and nothing more, designed entirely to give moviegoers a slick, unchallenging roller-coaster ride. Having said that, it’s a vast improvement over the 1990 sequel and the dreadful tie-ins with the Alien franchise, and should provide movie monster aficionados with an afternoon’s worth of thrills. –Paul Gaita

“Pretty good for what it is.” 2010-10-18
By DanD
They awaken in a jungle, one unfamiliar to any of them. They’re the best of the best. They’re trained to kill. They have one-word names like Royce and Cuchillo and Mombasa. And they’re all about to be hunted by a race of alien predators unlike anything they’ve ever imagined.

Right now: you’re either in or out. Odds are, you’re in. Considering that the franchise has only two real films (I’d rather discount the ALIEN tie-ins if it’s all the same to you), and only one of those was really any good (admit it!), PREDATOR has been pretty damn popular. You know the name brings with it sci-fi action/adventure, with a good dash of horror. Artfully, none of the PREDATOR films (this one included) could possibly stand up to the first ALIEN, even though they have all tried to do so. But you don’t watch a PREDATOR film for art. You watch it for the fun.

And PREDATORS is fun. Plain and simple. Lending the project credibility with his serious acting chops (mostly on hold here; he’s camping it up with delight) is Adrien Brody, one of the more unlikely action heroes (though he carried his own in KING KONG, remember). We’ve got Alice Braga as a tough-as-nails chick with attitude, Danny Trejo as a Mexican mercenary, and Laurence Fishburne giving a surprisingly good turn as a man who’s been in-country a mite too long. (It’s interesting to see Fishburne and Brody, two genuinely good actors, playing off each other; kind of makes you wish there was more of that, but then again, that would be a whole different movie.) We’ve got the prerequisite Japanese, Russian, and African toughies, and Topher Grace as a wise-cracking doctor. (Grace is another highlight, at least until the final quarter of the film, and even then, I blame the writers.) The Predators themselves look great–and we’ve got quite a variety, too. I won’t say the filmmakers have given them any emotional depth (they’re freakin’ Predators, man!), but it’s nice to see some diversity. And what a killer climax.

Overall, the film borrows heavily from the first, and that’s okay–it’s done with a wink and a nod. They know it, you know it, let’s get it out of the way and have some fun. The atmosphere is tense, the cinematography spectacular, the pace adequately suspenseful. The script falters a bit, and there’s a “twist” near the end that is entirely pointless, and generally weighs the film down. Still, for what it is–and that isn’t much, granted–PREDATORS is a fine way to kill a Saturday evening. Leave it to producer Robert Rodriguez to put a little umph back into a dying franchise, though one can’t help but wonder what the film would’ve been like if Rodriguez had chosen to write/direct it as well. Perhaps next time?

“The Hunt Is On!” 2010-10-18
By GS
A great film that stays true to the original Predator franchise instead of diluting the original story with the Alien vs. Predator franchise. Adrien Brody definitely embodies what people do and think when they find themselves in a situation they do not understand. I thought it was interesting when I found out there was an even more dangerous subspecies of Predator. I liked that the new Predators shared traits with human hunters, such as bear traps, mechanical hunting falcons, and a pack of alien hunting dogs. Whenever I watch this movie, the thought of being hunted by creatures of that kind of lethality. I would recommend this film to anyone who enjoys some good old fashion science fiction.
“Solid and true to the series!” 2010-10-17
By Edubrey (Phoenix, AZ USA)
First, stop it! This “Predators” is not better than the first “Predator”! The predecessor kills the movie on cast alone. Secondly, this movie is NOT better than the two AVP movies. They add to the Predator familiy of movies.

With that said, this was a fun and exciting movie! One that fits in nicely with the collection. Hey, if you’re a fan…you’re a fan! Has anyone ever wondered (or looked up the fact) why these movies do better on indvd/bluray? Because people love them and they don’t need to speend forty bucks at the movies when then kow that they’re going to bring it home!

This movie rocks and falls nicely in the current order of released Predator films. If you’re a fan…you’re a fan; go get it!

I would say its more of a remake of the original then sequel because they kept so many thins from the original film in this movie. the movie itself is fantastic and I have no problem with it zI do qualify it as a sequel but at the same time a remake its hard to explain without spoiling any thing. but if u like predator you will definately like this movie and it is a bit better then predator 2

“Tribute to the original Predator” 2010-10-17
By Joshua Hale (Texas)
This isn’t so much of a sequel as a tribute to the original Predator movie. Pieces of the classic original are honored in this film such as the music and the overall environment of the movie itself. Some people say this is worse that the two AVP movies, but that’s a load of crap. In my opinion this is up to par with the original itself. Just as Aliens was to the original Alien. It has its own story line, with a twist at the end many wouldn’t expect. Some critics are upset because you don’t get a real look at the predators until at least halfway through through the movie. Hello. You never saw the monster in the original until practically the very end! The whole point of them being hunters so that you can’t see them when you’re being hunted. This just shows that the director knew how to make this movie. He keeps you at the edge of your seat until the very end. And its almost impossible to guess what will happen next. The bar is definitely set high in the Predator reboot thanks to the release of Predators!

Product Description

It all begins… with a choice. In the third chapter of Stephenie Meyer’s phenomenal Twilight series, Bella Swan is surrounded by danger as Seattle is hit by a string of murders and an evil vampire continues her quest for revenge. In the midst of it all, Bella is forced to choose between her love, Edward Cullen, and her friend, Jacob Black—knowing that her decision may ignite the ageless struggle between vampire and werewolf.

Amazon.com

The third installment of Stephenie Meyer’s blockbuster vampire series is its most action packed, both in terms of fight scenes and human-vampire-werewolf lovin’. In Eclipse, the vampiric Cullen clan and the werewolves–their sworn enemies–unite against an army of “newborn” vampires, whose remnants of human blood in their veins makes them stronger and more uncontrollable, causing a string of murders in the Seattle area. They’ve been created by the vengeful vampire Victoria (Bryce Dallas Howard, taking over for Rachelle Lefevre), still keen on destroying human Bella (Kristen Stewart). Thus, Bella is under careful watch, and her undead love Edward (Robert Pattinson) and werewolf best friend Jacob (Taylor Lautner) spend a lot of time arguing over who is the better man for her. (In one hilarious scene where Bella’s freezing and only Jacob has the lupine body heat to warm her, he looks over at Edward and cracks, “I am hotter than you.” Go Team Jacob!) But there’s more at the heart of the triangle than love: Bella, against Edward’s warnings, doesn’t want to grow older than him and would willingly give up contact with her parents, the chance to grow old with children, and more to be turned into a bloodthirsty vampire. (Jacob’s trump card is that Bella wouldn’t have to give up her mortality to be with him.) But the unfolding of this love triangle is even clumsier than it was on the page; you’re never really convinced Bella has romantic feelings for Jacob, even during their climactic kiss on top of the mountain. This is likely to confuse non-readers of the book series, as Stewart emotes nothing that intones there’s a real competition here (clearly, she’s Team Edward).Pattinson, on the other hand, appears to have overcome his awkwardness to become a much cooler Edward; Howard, while missing Lefevre’s mischief as Victoria, brings her own touch of soft-spoken manipulation; and Billy Burke, as Bella’s father Charlie, continues to steal every scene he’s in. The other Cullens also get far more play here, notably Rosalie (Nikki Reed), whose revealing back story is touching and tragic, and Jasper (Jackson Rathbone), who trains everyone in combat and who, halfway through the movie, adopts a sudden Southern accent that he didn’t have before, once it’s revealed he was a Confederate soldier (on a side note, it’s mentioned in the books that Jasper can calm the emotions of others, but that trait isn’t used in the movie). The climactic fight scene is well staged by director David Slade (30 Days of Night, Hard Candy); the violence, while not bloody, is still more abundant and disturbing than in the previous films; and the sex, while not actually happening between anyone (yet), is certainly on everyone’s mind (but Edward wants to get married first). It seems the characters, and the series, are growing up. –Ellen A. Kim
i agree with thomas m. de feo, there is just NO chemistry between stewart and pattinson: edward and jacob should run off and get married in toronto and create a totally NEW tribe (family) of two-spirit vamp-wolves; now, that would be a major, chemical reaction. call the series, the ‘two-spirit saga’ and really torch the screen with some immortal vampire-werewolf action.

“Better than the others” 2010-10-15
By K. Shyne (Chicago, IL)
Eclipse is by far the better movie. I hated Twilight and actually fell asleep the first time I saw it because it moved so slowly and the characters weren’t as well defined as they are in the book. I did decide to take another look when it came to cable and decided it wasn’t the actors who trashed the movie but the director and screenwriter. The actors were uncomfortable and awkward in the movie because that’s how they were depicted in the books. Everyone. Charlie and Bella weren’t physically affectionate. Bella was an outsider in AZ, therefore felt awkward in Forks. Edward was afraid he’d kill Bella and felt physical pain when he was near her because he wanted to kill her. So after re-watching it, I got it, but it was not translated to the screen how/why Bella and Edward were so passionate about each other.

Fast forward to New Moon and Eclipse. Thank goodness they got new people behind the scenes because the movies began to improve. Edward was a bit more emotional in Eclipse than he should’ve been with Jacob. Jacob, in the books is a bit immature and silly and Edward is, afterall 109+ so he’s more of a grown-up. He’s more in control. They really need to work on Edward and Bella’s passionate scenes. These two should be slobbering all over each other and breathing heavy until Edward comes to his senses and pushes Bella away. That’s what you got from the books, but it’s not intense in the movies as it should be.

Hopefully all that pent up angst will be shown in Breaking Dawn and not PG as it was in the books. Bella and Edward should get down and dirty and show more passion for each other. Afterall, Bella has been lusting for Edward and so have we. Give us what we want!!!

“amazing movie” 2010-10-10
By LiLi
Usually when it comes to books made into movies they are so off that its just not fun watching the movies, and I’ll admit the Twilight movies mix things up and change a couple things but for the most part are true to form, and the latest installment “Eclipse” was by far the most amazing movie in the saga, I loved every minute of it and it was well worth the hiked up opening weekend prices to see it. I have read each book in the saga (including The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner) at least half a dozen times if not more and I know every detail. I am completely in love with this series and can’t wait for the Breaking Dawn films to come out.

Acclaimed filmmaker Christopher Nolan directs an international cast in this sci-fi actioner that travels around the globe and into the world of dreams. Dom Cobb (Leonardo DiCaprio) is the best there is at extraction: stealing valuable secrets inside the subconscious during the mind’s vulnerable dream state. His skill has made him a coveted player in industrial espionage but also has made him a fugitive and cost him dearly. Now he may get a second chance if he can do the impossible: inception, planting an idea rather than stealing one. If they succeed, Cobb and his team could pull off the perfect crime. But no planning or expertise can prepare them for a dangerous enemy that seems to predict their every move. An enemy only Cobb could have seen coming.

Science-fiction features often involve time travel or strange worlds. In Christopher Nolan’s heist thriller Inception, the concepts converge through the realm of dreams. With his trusty associate, Arthur (Joseph Gordon-Levitt, a fine foil), Dom Cobb (Leonardo DiCaprio, in a role that recalls Shutter Island) steals ideas for clients from the minds of competitors. Fallen on hard times, he’s become estranged from his family and hopes one last extraction will set things right. Along comes Saito (Ken Watanabe, Batman Begins), who hires Cobb to plant an idea in the mind of energy magnate Fischer (Cillian Murphy, another Batman vet). Less experienced with the art of inception, Cobb ropes in an architecture student (Ellen Page), a chemist (Dileep Rao), and a forger (Tom Hardy) for assistance. During their preparations, Page’s Ariadne stumbles upon a secret that may jeopardize the entire operation: Cobb is losing the ability to control his subconscious (Marion Cotillard plays a figure from his past). Until this point, the scenario can be confusing, since the action begins inside a dream before returning to reality. Then, after the team gets to Fischer, three dream states play out at once, resulting in four narratives, including events in the real world. It all makes sense within the rules Nolan establishes, but the impatient may find themselves much like Guy Pearce in Memento: completely confused. If Inception doesn’t hit the same heights as The Dark Knight, Nolan’s finest film to date, it’s a gravity-defying spectacular to rival Dark City and The Matrix. –Kathleen C. Fennessy

“”The Matrix” done right” 2010-10-17
By Wayne Meyers
There was nothing wrong with the matrix. In fact, I love The Matrix. However, Inception is much better. Some people will say not to compare the two but I say nice try because they’re very similar. Inception is much more deep, yet less complicated. Matrix, as Leonard Maltin put it, began to break it’s own rules. If that btohered you about The Matrix, then try Inception because it is spactacular!

This movie is the perfection of everything you could want in a film. Action, Drama, and Special effects done in such a unique way. This movie will have you on the edge of your seat. The people who wrote negative reviews on this movie are the same people who thought that Sandra Bullock deserved the Oscar for the most overrated movie of all time the Blindside.

“Best Movie of the Year!” 2010-10-16
By amerdale876 (MD)
I know a movie critic isn’t supposed to summarize at the beginning of his review, but I’ll come right out and say it right now: “Inception” is the best film of the year! Now, I know there are at least another five months left in the year, but I’ve viewed the upcoming releases and, besides Ben Affleck’s “The Town” and/or David Fincher’s “The Social Network” having the only chance of disproving my statement, trust me, there aren’t any more contenders. So I’m safe in calling this right now. With its movie trailers that recall shades of The Matrix and Dark City (Director’s Cut), “Inception” is brought to us by one of the best filmmakers today, Christopher Nolan (the man behind the successful – finally! – reboot of the Batman franchise). And while “Inception” does have a mind-altering plot like “The Matrix” and “Dark City,” that’s where the similarities end. The only description I will give besides stating that it’s a cool heist noir film that balances drama, action and science fiction with one master stroke, is that the film revolves around a group of dream extractors lead by Dominic “Dom” Cobb (Leonardo DiCaprio) who rather than extract information from a target’s mind, are hired to implant an idea in a new corporate leader’s (Cillian Murphy) head, hence the title “Inception.”

Besides DiCaprio and Murphy, the rest of the cast are also spectacular: Joseph Gordon-Levitt (one of my favorite actors), Marion Cotillard, Ken Watanabe, Ellen Page, Tom Hardy, Tom Berenger, Dileep Rao, and brief appearances by Michael Caine, Lukas Haas, and Pete Postlethwaite. Nolan has always been blessed with great actors in all of his films (Memento (Widescreen Two-Disc Limited Edition), Insomnia, The Prestige, and the aforementioned Batman movies), so it’s really no surprise that he gets the best performances. It also helps that Nolan is one of the best contemporary screenwriters and it is evidenced in all of his works. I heard that he is shepherding the next Superman film and, after first reading up on it, I was a little nervous because I’ve heard reports of him and screenwriter David Goyer handling it like it’s never been done before. However, after viewing Inception, I am completely comfortable with his handling a character for which I have such a strong affection.

It’s surprising to hear that for many of the film’s spellbinding (and mindbending) sequences, rather than using CGI, Nolan insisted on placing the actors on actual rotating sets, making the action look real. And I’m grateful he did; it shows in the film’s overall production value. In a day when films are bogged down with CGI and little – or recycled – plot (ahem, “Avatar”), it’s something really special when a film not only makes you think on an intellectual level, but also delivers a fresh story with emotional depth. As I said in my review for Toy Story 3 (Four-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo + Digital Copy), James Cameron’s “Avatar” is visually and technically stunning but its story is extremely predictable just from watching the trailer, it’s uninspiring and trite (the story being a recycled product of several films, most notably Dances with Wolves, Pocahontas, and even Cameron’s own earlier, better release The Abyss, which focused more on emotion rather than special effects). And that’s where most films are headed nowadays. That’s why when films like Inception come along, it’s important to embrace them … especially when it’s well written and well acted such as this. I know the technical aspects of a film are important as well, but, above all, CGI and special effects should never take precedence or drown out a film’s story. Fortunately, Inception perfectly balances the mindblowing special effects and story.

Yes, there are plenty of special effects in this film, but the real standout aspect to this film is its story – it’s original and captivating with a plot that keeps you biting your nails right until the end. I’ve heard some reviews and reactions from people saying that this film is confusing and difficult to follow; I couldn’t disagree more. The film is involved and you do need to actually think and pay attention to the story, but if you do, there is no confusion. My only advice would be that if you have to use the restroom during this two-and-a-half hour masterpiece, make sure you’re either with someone or sitting near someone who can explain to you what you missed because you’ll need to know. There are more than two different realities in this film so you’ll definitely need to pay attention; this isn’t some film you go to with friends and talk to during the entire film and yet still can follow what’s happening.

Nolan’s original work proves that he should be doing more original projects (aside from his debut, “Following,” all of his films have either been a remake of a film or based on a novel or comic), and I can only hope that there are more in store in the near future. As I stated earlier, the action is paced very well without overloading the senses and it keeps you on the edge of your seat all the way through the journey with DiCaprio and company until the end. The concept of time in a dream state as well as other aspects of dreaming are intriguingly explored without dumbing down dialogue and explanations to insult the audience’s intelligence, but, at the same time, is not so much complex that you need an encyclopedia to view the film.

“Inception” provides lush visuals, a uniquely stylish story and a range of emotions that should make every great film. After viewing this film, a friend wrote me, telling me to drop anything I was doing and go see “Inception” because there was nothing more important. Well, that’s a bit extreme (no offense to him!). However, “Inception” is a must-see and if anyone were to ask me, I’d say without hesitation that it’s the best film of 2010.

“We Don’t Get These Kind Of Movies Often…” 2010-10-15
By Nicolena (USA)
How often do we get Science Fiction noir anymore? Rarely. This is not the type of film that everyone will like. Most studios don’t get a box office hit out of them since they usually cater to a niche audience. I know some people who found Inception boring, slow, or confusing. Others will say it is cold or not enough characterization.

But if you are a fan of the Matrix or Dark City or heist thrillers like me, then this movie is your Christmas. The movie is set around a heist orchestrated by the main character named Dom Cobb. From Wikipedia: DiCaprio plays Dom Cobb, a thief who extracts information from the unconscious mind of his victims while they dream. Unable to visit his children, Cobb is offered a chance to regain his old life in exchange for one last job: performing inception, the planting of an idea into the mind of his client’s competitor. That’s the movie summary and I won’t give away any more plot details as it is best to go into it unaware.

Nolan uses an interesting frontier, dreams, as a place of espionage, intrigue and introspection. It would seem that the scene of the crime is the mark’s mind but as you watch the movie you come to realize that the scene of the crime is Dom Cobb’s mind. Some people were put off by Cobb. Not me. As I watched the movie, I became emotionally invested in the Cobb character, and no matter his occupation or faults, I could feel his weariness and desperation to just go home & be with his family. I aslo got invested into the mark’s dilemma, too.

If you’re not able to get into Cobb then you probably won’t enjoy the film. The supporting characters don’t get much characterization. But the actors brought them to life and hinted to their backgrounds which made them more interesting than if we spent time getting to know them. Some people are frustrated when we don’t get the supporting character’s life stories. Me? I like some mystery and filling in the blanks from what I am given. More importantly, I felt like I would enjoy spending time with these characters and that feeling stayed even after the movie was over.

There is a lot of info and nature of dream reality that is thrown at you. This usually makes people confused or say it was “acting complicated” when it isn’t. I didn’t find Inception complicated or confusing. Inception is a movie where you have to pay attention and use your brain to keep track of the rules of the dream and levels. Most people don’t expect to use much of their brain when go to seeing an action film. Well, you will here so be prepared.

In conclusion, I loved Inception. Is it the greatest move ever? Of course, not. Will it change your life? No, it’s just a movie. Will you be treated to a good scifi noir with engaging characters, action and story? Most, definitely.

“Am I dreaming?” 2010-10-15
By Texan (Texas)
Chris Nolan delivers another thought provoking movie that actually has good story, character development, action, and special effects. Dicaprio’s character has been accused of murdering his wife and cannot return to America to see his children. He works to extract information from people via dreams. The movie centers around an offer from a wealthy business man who can buy Dicarpio’s freedom back to the states if Dicaprio agrees to do one more job-plant an idea in someone elses mind. It is a mix of Matrix and James Bond. This movie will keep you on the edge of your seat.

You cannot miss any part as you may miss a big piece of the plot.

What made the original Toy Story so great, besides its significant achievement as the first-ever feature-length computer animated film, was its ability to instantly transport viewers into a magical world where it seemed completely plausible that toys were living, thinking beings who sprang to life the minute they were alone and wanted nothing more than to be loved and played with by their children. Toy Story 3 absolutely succeeds in the very same thing–adults and children alike, whether they’ve seen the original film or not, find themselves immediately immersed in a world in which Woody (Tom Hanks), Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen), Jessie (Joan Cusack), Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head (Don Rickles and Estelle Harris), Ham (John Ratzenberger), Rex (Wallace Shawn), the aliens, and the rest of Andy’s toys remain completely devoted to Andy (John Morris) even as he’s getting ready to pack up and leave for college. Woody scoffs at the other toys’ worries that they’ll end up in the garbage, assuring them that they’ve earned a spot of honor in the attic, but when the toys are mistakenly donated to Sunnyside Daycare, Woody is the only toy whose devotion to Andy outweighs the promise of getting played with each and every day. Woody sets off toward home alone while the other toys settle in for some daycare fun, but things don’t turn out quite as expected at the daycare thanks to the scheming, strawberry-scented old-timer bear Lots-o’-Huggin’ (Ned Beatty). Eventually, Woody rejoins his friends and they all attempt a daring escape from the daycare, which could destroy them all. The pacing of the film is impeccable at this point, although the sense of peril may prove almost too intense for a few young viewers. Pixar’s 3-D computer animation is top-notch as always and the voice talent in this film is tremendous, but in the end, it’s Pixar’s uncanny ability to combine drama, action, and humor in a way that irresistibly draws viewers into the world of the film that makes Toy Story 3 such great family entertainment.
I was only 11-years-old when Toy Story hit theaters back in 1995, and to this day it remains my all-time favorite animated film. It changed the face of animation forever and graced us with some of the warmest characters we’ve ever known. Toy Story 3 brings all those fond memories and adventures back home for us, once more.

Woody (Tom Hanks) and Buzz (Time Allen) are still the personal toys of their beloved child, Andy. But Andy is all grown up, and off to college. Whatever is to happen to Woody and the gang? Only a select group of the toys we met in the original film remain in Andy’s long forgotten toy box, which is brilliantly realistic, and they are all begging to be played with.

When a final excruciatingly, disappointing attempt to gain Andy’s attention and affection fails them; the toys begin to accept that they are no longer needed, and this crushes their spirits. It soon becomes blindingly obvious that their near future will be coursed down one of only three lonely and unfamiliar roads: leading them either to the attic, the garbage, or as donations to a daycare.

Much to everyone’s surprise, including Woody’s – Woody finds himself the only toy in which Andy has chosen to take to college. The rest of them wind up by mistake, in a box designated the `daycare’ box, by Andy’s mom. Woody adds himself to this donation parcel, in hopes of springing everyone free from the no doubt horrible daycare, first chance he gets.

Everyone but Woody seems pretty fond of the idea of daycare. And why shouldn’t they? None of them were selected to go to college with Andy. The idea of new children in tempered with their youth wanting to play with all of them, is as good as paradise. So Woody leaves them behind to go with Andy.

Ned Beatty joins the franchise as the voice of Lotso; a bright pink Teddy Bear at the day care, who’s child abandoned him. Lotso is head of a gang of toys new to us, to include a Ken doll voiced by none other, than Michael Keaton!

Somehow, Disney and Pixar have taken their divine talents in animation to yet another level here, and Toy Story 3 is neck and neck with Despicable Me for my pick for best animated feature of the year. I was expecting to have fun this time around, but feared the formula would become tiresome and the jokes would be recycled from the first two installments. This is not the case. From the hilarious action-packed opening, to the tear jerking finale, Toy Story 3 was one of the best cinematic adventures of the year!

At one point Buzz has his voice-pack changed to a Spanish setting and at another Mrs. Potato-Head is able to see with her missing eye left while it’s left back in Andy’s room. Oh, and Mr. Potato Head has to improvise by using leftover lunch items to substitute for his plastic body when it’s otherwise indisposed! These are just a few of the many hilarious moments the movie offers.

Toy Story 3 is a treat for kids, no doubt. But it will offer them some insight on their feelings about life, and their relationships with the people in their lives, in addition to just entertaining them. It’s a cartoon, sure – but it’s written very well and it’s gushing with moral substance; enough for kids and adults to both indulge in. You won’t find that in too many children’s films. And let’s not forget the amazingly talented cast this franchise has in tow.

What I appreciated most about Toy Story 3, that the first two lacked, was the amount of emotion we spill for these characters. We were getting to know them the first two times around, but as I mentioned early on; now – much like Andy, we’ve grown up with them. Seeing them left behind by Andy, and the brilliant ending – ripped me apart. We really care about these characters by the end of the film, and we’ve enjoyed the hours we’ve shared with them over the years. But in due time, I suppose we all have to put away childish things. It’s a shame, though.

“A Funny and Endearing Tear-Jerker” 2010-09-28
By Maureen R. Tagliaferro (Middlesex, NJ United States)
Did you ever wonder how a toy got in a certain spot? Did you ever look at a worn-out teddy bear and wonder what type of life it had? Did you ever wonder what toys would tell us if they could speak? – Well, neither did I; but this movie will surely have you thinking.

For those of you who have seen the prequels to this movie, Andy, our one-time six-year-old human protagonist is now ready for college, and like most kids his age, he is closing one door to open another. For a college kid, the doors are plentiful. – For old toys, it’s more limited, as it’s simply a matter of closing the bedroom door to open the attic door – if the toys are lucky.

Well Andy’s beloved toys end up being luckier than most, as they managed to escape garage sales, garbage cans, and even the confined safety of an attic retirement village. – But not before they have another adventure of a lifetime. It’s one that includes a psychopathic but sad teddy bear, his accomplice baby doll, a neurotic monkey, a knowledgeable telephone, a threatening incinerator, and enough Ken outfits to have made even Elton John jealous during his heyday – not to mention Barbie.

Andy matures, and so do his toys, as they not only have a bond with Andy, but to themselves, their new acquaintances, and the imagination of a new owner. Towards the end of movie, we see Andy letting go of his toys – and his childhood. But he and his toys fulfill their commitment to each other as both the human and his imaginary counterparts have a lot more living to do and love to offer – in their separate yet not-so-separate worlds.

This movie brings a lot of laughter, but also some tears, in spite of a happy ending. Mothers sending their children off to college for the first time will end up bawling. I know I did, even though I wasn’t in their situation. On the bright side, these parents will have less cleaning up to do after their children leave, because after seeing this movie, the college kiddies won’t trust anyone else to pack up their cherished belongings.

Now, did you ever wonder if Ken was gay? Personally, I think he’s just misunderstood, but in addition to making you wonder, this film keeps the rumor – and humor – going.

“Toy Story 3-by far the best of the series” 2010-09-26
Toy Story 3 was thouroughly enjoyable for both my 9 year old and me. The mixture of humor, drama, and action appealed to all ages. We both left feeling that the series ended well. We are looking forward to enjoying the movie at home for years to come.

Product Description

Coming to Special Edition DVD for the first time, it’s the complete Fawlty Towers collection with all-new commentary from John Cleese! Hot off the runaway success of Monty Python’s Flying Circus, John Cleese embarked on his now-legendary sitcom, Fawlty Towers, creating one of the most memorable and best loved characters in all of British comedy, Basil Fawlty. Basil Fawlty is a much put-upon, hard-working hotel manager whose life is plagued by dead guests, hotel inspectors, and riff-raff. Of course his biggest headache is his “little nest of vipers,” his nagging wife Sibyl. Together they run their hotel, Fawlty Towers, with a little help from the unflappable Polly and the trainee waiter from Barcelona with marginally more intelligence than a monkey, Manuel.-Exclusive commentary by John Cleese

Basil Fawlty, as created and performed by John Cleese, is the rudest, most boorish, most hilariously obnoxious man on the face of the planet. What a natural for a TV sitcom! His screen wife, Sybil (Prunella Scales), put it best in the episode “The Psychiatrist”: “You’re either crawling all over them, licking their boots, or spitting poison at them like some Benzedrine puff adder.” He mockingly replies, “Just trying to enjoy myself, dear.” With his gangly frame and contortionist abilities, Cleese brilliantly punctuates Basil’s outrageous faux pas with absurd gymnastics and turns Three Stooges-style pokes and kicks into a slapstick ballet. Scales’s Sybil is the genial but obliviously chatty voice of reason and Andrew Sachs mangles the English language as the Spanish bellhop Manuel, whose struggles with simple directions results in comic lunacy reminiscent of Robert Benigni. After a six-episode run in 1975, Cleese and cowriter and costar Connie Booth (who plays Polly, the maid all too often pulled into Basil’s ridiculous plans) reunited the cast in 1979 for another six episodes without missing a punch line. The four-volume collection contains all 12 shows, interspersed with interview segments featuring Cleese discussing the genesis of the series and anecdotes about the individual episodes. Remember to watch the opening credits of each show to spot the creative misspellings on the hotel sign (our favorite: “Fatty Owls”). –Sean AxmakerAlso on the discs
While enjoying your Fawlty Towers holiday, be sure to extend your stay by visiting the deluxe extra features. New to this set are entertaining commentaries by John Cleese, who provides illuminating insights into how these “lovely little farces” were constructed. He expresses genuine affection for the cast and guest stars, is quick to praise exquisite bits of comic business (“This is funnier than I remember”), and is not shy about criticizing his own performance (“I don’t think I acted this right”). Also new to this set are newly filmed interviews with Cleese, Prunella Scales, Andrew Sachs, and Connie Booth, who offers some great anecdotes about collaborating with her then-husband Cleese and how some memorable gags were created. Donald Sinclair, the real-life rude hotelier who inspired the character of Basil Fawlty, is given his due, but be forewarned you will hear several versions of the Eric Idle ticking suitcase story. Also appearing are notable guest stars, including Bernard Cribbins (“The Hotel Inspectors”), Geoffrey Palmer (“The Kipper and the Corpse”), and David Kelly (“The Builders”), who talk of their experiences on one of television’s towering sitcoms. There is also an odd “Cheap Tatty Review.” Holdover features from the previously released boxed set include episode commentaries by directors John Howard Davies and Bob Spiers; archival interviews with Cleese, Scales, and Sachs; a short film about Torquay; disappointingly paltry outtakes; and a helpful Who’s Who guide to the series’ cast and guest stars. –Donald Liebenson
After watching these episodes on Broadcast Television for years, I was amazed to learn how many episodes had been produced; I thought there were more. If you know and enjoy Fawlty Towers, already, get this for your mate. S/he will love you all the more; an episode before sleep is better than a cigarette, and who know? Some episodes might make you stay up longer.

I love Fawlty Towers and have been a dedicated fan for decades, but this DVD, with each episode re-mastered is simply a must-have for any Fawlty Towers fan. The re-mastering makes the episodes look great and of course, this is some of the best comedy to ever emerge from England. A fantastic DVD that would be a great addition to any fan’s collection!

“The Best Comedy Series Ever!” 2010-08-09
By CJ
I first saw ‘Fawlty Towers’ when I was about 14 and every episode had me in stitches. I can still watch it today 25 years later, and titter at the gags I have seen so many time before. Each episode has people running around like in a French farce, but the main source of amusement has to come from Basil Fawlty, uniquely portrayed by the talented John Cleese. That is not to say that the other actors and actresses were not brilliant, for they all were! It all worked to create seemless and hilarious comedy. ‘Fawlty Towers’ never had the chance to go stale as only two series were made, that is 12 episodes in all. It never ages, although you do need to put yourself back in time a bit to understwnd what’s going on with the mad major. See this series at least once in your life!

“brought tears to my eyes” 2010-07-02
By Don Pendleton (NEWTON, NC, US)
My wife and I remember watching these episodes when they first aired back when they were new on the PBS station in S. Florida. Our kids, now with kids of their own, laughed right along with us. These are to be treasured for sure and we highly recommend them to anyone needing a break from the day to day grind. It gives us a sense of release from stress just being able to laugh all over again at Basil’s antics with Manuel. We still use some of the catch phrases around here and just now remember where they came from, like, “I’ll give you a damn good thrashing”, when something goes wrong around the house. Lately I’ve been hearing ” oooh, I know” a lot more from the wife. We are truly enjoying these all over again, thanks for preserving them on these fine quality CD’s. We are looking for another set of ‘old goodies’ to purchase next.

By Mr. Swing (Buffalo, NY USA)
If you haven’t seen “Fawlty Towers,” you are in for a treat. And if you have, this new set means you are in for a treat as well, with John Cleese’s commentary. It’s probably the most insightful DVD commentary I’ve ever heard, as Cleese, 30 years later, shows point by point how he and Connie Booth polished the scripts and how he thinks the writing, the performance or the direction could have been improved. You’ll find he is a tough critic of his own work, but at some points he can’t help it, the pride shines through at having created these miniature masterpieces. Watch each episode as broadcast first, then watch it again with the commentary on, and you’ll learn a lot if you’re so inclined. It’s a master class in comedy writing. Or just sit back, hit “play” and laugh yourself hoarse. The only comparison is to early Marx Brothers or perhaps some of the great “I Love Lucy” episodes. Cleese’s goal was to create, not a typical sitcom, but a classic farce, and he succeeded.
Product Description

Set in and around a quaint French village during the late 18th century, Beauty and the Beast follows the fantastic adventures of Belle, a bright and beautiful young woman who finds escape from her ordinary life, and the advances of a boorish suitor, Gaston, by reading books. Meanwhile, off in a castle in the distance, a cruel young prince is cast under the spell of an enchantress who turns him into a tormented beast, while transforming his servants into animated household objects. In order to remove the curse, the Beast must discover a true love who will return his affection before the last petal falls from an enchanted rose. When Belle’s inventor father stumbles upon the Beast’s castle and is taken prisoner, Belle comes to the rescue and agrees to take her father’s place. With the help of the castle’s enchanted staff, she sees beneath the Beast’s exterior and discovers the heart and soul of a human prince.

Amazon.com essential video

The film that officially signaled Disney’s animation renaissance (following The Little Mermaid) and the only animated feature to receive a Best Picture Oscar nomination, Beauty and the Beast remains the yardstick by which all other animated films should be measured. It relates the story of Belle, a bookworm with a dotty inventor for a father; when he inadvertently offends the Beast (a prince whose heart is too hard to love anyone besides himself), Belle boldly takes her father’s place, imprisoned in the Beast’s gloomy mansion. Naturally, Belle teaches the Beast to love. What makes this such a dazzler, besides the amazingly accomplished animation and the winning coterie of supporting characters (the Beast’s mansion is overrun by quipping, dancing household items) is the array of beautiful and hilarious songs by composer Alan Menken and the late, lamented lyricist Howard Ashman. (The title song won the 1991 Best Song Oscar, and Menken’s score scored a trophy as well.) The downright funniest song is “Gaston,” a lout’s paean to himself (including the immortal line, “I use antlers in all of my de-co-ra-ting”). “Be Our Guest” is transformed into an inspired Busby Berkeley homage. Since Ashman’s passing, animated musicals haven’t quite reached the same exhilarating level of wit, sophistication, and pure joy. –David Kronke –This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

The video got to my home in wonderful time. There were a few “glitches” with the DVD but once you get past the first 30 minutes it gets better. The movie was purchased for a three year old-she does not see the Camcorder flashing at the top of the video during the beginning thirty minutes but she does get upset when the movie freezes during one scene and must be fast forward to get past it. Time delivery was awesome but the video was not “like new”.

“The Little Mermaid” rejuvenated the creative spirit at the Mouse House, but the followup effort, “Beauty and the Beast,” gave that spirit full reign. From the vibrant (often comic) characterizations to the sublime songs by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman, the movie demonstrates the best of Disney–a timeless animated musical with cleverness and class.

Wow, I watched this movie earlier to refresh my memory, and it’s such a beautiful love story that will warm your heart. Belle is an unusual woman who loves reading books and wants a life outside her village. When her father goes missing, she arrives to the castle of the Beast. Belle offers to become the Beast’s prisoner if he releases her father. (The Beast was cursed years ago by an enchantress. Unless someone falls in love with him as a beast, he will remain that way forever) I love how he starts out as seeming like a monster, but he turns out nice and he protects her from wolves and a hunter named Gaston. Will Belle fall in love with the Beast before the last rose petal falls? I highly recommend BEAUTY AND THE BEAST!!!

I wish I could tell you how I like or dislike this dvd but as of today, Sept. 29, it has been a month since I was told it had been shipped, my card has had the purchase price taken off, and NO dvd has arrived. I am very disappointed and wish I would get a response to the 2 e-mails I sent to the distributor. Any feedback from Amazon would be welcome.

Studio: Warner Home Video Release Date: 07/21/2009 Run time: 128 minutes Rating: R

Amazon.com

Everybody’s favorite graphic novel comes to the screen (after years of rumors and false starts), less a roaring work of adaptation than a respectful and faithful take on a radical original. Watchmen is set in the mid-1980s, a time of increased nuclear tension between the United States and the Soviet Union, as Richard Nixon is enjoying his fifth term as president and the world’s superheroes have been forcibly retired. (As you can probably tell, the mix of authentic history and alternate reality is heady.) Things begin with a bang: the mysterious high-rise murder of the Comedian (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), a masked hero with a checkered past, puts the rest of the retired superhero community on alert. The credits sequence, a series of tableaux that wittily catches us up on crime-fighting backstory, actually turns out to be the high point of the movie. Thereafter we meet the other caped and hooded avengers: the furious Rorschach (Jackie Earle Haley), the inexplicably naked Dr. Manhattan (Billy Crudup, amidst much blue-skinned, genital-swinging digital work), Silk Spectre II (Malin Akerman), Nite Owl II (Patrick Wilson), and Ozymandias (Matthew Goode). The corkscrewing storytelling, which worked well in the comic book, gives the movie the strange sense of never quite getting in gear, even as some of the episodes are arresting. Director Zack Snyder (300) doesn’t try to approximate the electric impact of the original (written by Alan Moore–who declined to be credited on the movie–and illustrated by Dave Gibbons) but retains careful fidelity to his source material. That doesn’t feel right, even with the generally enjoyable roll-out of anecdotes. Even less forgivable is the blah acting, excepting Jeffrey Dean Morgan (lusty) and Patrick Wilson (mellow). Watchmen certainly fills the eyes, although less so the ears: the song choices are regrettable, especially during an embarrassing mid-air coupling between Nite Owl II and Silk Spectre II as they unite their–ah–Roman numerals. In the end it feels as though a huge work of transcription has been successfully completed, which isn’t the same as making a full-blooded movie experience. –Robert HortonAlso on the Blu-ray disc
The extended director’s cut restores 24 minutes of connective tissue to the 162-minute film, most significantly the last scene of Hollis Mason, the first Nite Owl. Other elements help restore and fill in details that had been in the graphic novel. Fans of the film will be glad for the extra footage but there’s nothing momentous that will change anyone’s basic like or dislike of the film.

By far the most interesting Blu-ray feature (in addition to the great picture and DTS-HD Master Audio sound) is the Maximum Movie Mode, which incorporates several features into the viewing experience. Director Zack Snyder periodically appears on screen in front of two large monitors, one continuing to play the movie and the other displaying special-effects shots or scenes from the graphic novel. Snyder talks about how he shot the film and points out details in a variety of scenes: the opening with the Comedian, Dr. Manhattan’s lab, the Nite Owl ship, Mars, Antarctica, and the ending (and why it was changed for the movie). This feature is much more interesting than an audio commentary or a standard picture-in-picture commentary so it’d be nice if it had been done for more scenes. Also appearing in Maximum Movie Mode is a timeline contrasting events in the Watchmen world with the “real world,” occasional picture-in-picture comments by cast and crew, still galleries, and a series of 11 “focus points” that allow you to exit the film to watch these three-minute featurettes (sets, costumes, the Minutemen, etc.). Worthy of mention is how easy the Maximum Movie Mode material is to find: Snyder’s footage and the focus points are very visible (even in fast-forward), and you can also access the focus points directly from the main menu.

The second disc has three documentaries. The first, “The Phenomenon: The Comic That Changed Comics,” 29 min.), looks at the original graphic novel and its themes, and interviews artist Dave Gibbons, DC Comics executives Jenette Kahn and Paul Levitz, and cast and crew, illustrating its points with scenes from the movie, panels from the graphic novel, and parts of the motion comic. The next two are only on the Blu-ray disc but are less interesting and of varying relevance to the movie. “Real Superheroes, Real Vigilantes” (26 min.) examines real-life vigilantes including the Guardian Angels and New York subway gunman Bernard Goetz and compares them to Rorschach. “Mechanics: Technologies of a Future World” (17 min.) spotlights a physicist who served as a consultant on the movie. He talks about his experiences then discusses whether elements from the movie, such as Dr. Manhattan, the Owl Ship, and Rorschach’s mask could really work. There’s also My Chemical Romance’s “Desolation Row” music video , and BD-Live offers even more making-of material. A third disc with a Digital Copy of the film (compatible with both iTunes and Windows Media; download code expires July 21, 2010) was included with early shipments of the Blu-ray disc but is no longer available. –David Horiuchi

“Preferable to the Ultimate Cut” 2010-08-08
By Tainted-Cell
This is a work-in-progress of the finished product Zack Snyder promised fans just before the theatrical release of “Watchmen”. Watchmen: The Ultimate Cut contains everything – which is to say that it features the Black Freighter comic in animated form, and a few blink-and-you’ll-miss-it transitional segments with the kid who’s reading it. Honestly, I never really liked the Black Freighter interludes in the book, and in the Ultimate Cut, I found that it interrupts the flow terribly. So with that said, THIS director’s cut is much better in comparison, and I recommend it to anyone interested in the film. The extended scenes (described in previous reviews) are wonderful elaborations, and of course, Hollis Mason’s death scene is heart-wrenching. You don’t want to miss this.

“Apocalypse, or the end of music?” 2010-07-28
By Robert (Fresno, Ca.)
Im not sure what this movie is celebrating, superheroes, murder mysteries, evil violence, or just the brand new hope for the end of music as we know it, replacing it with the whining voices that have been shunned or set aside all these years, because it is here they make their grand debut out of our consciousness. At any rate, the soundtrack sucks with over political overtones of the lost 60s, and believe me, if the soundtrack sucks (I would exit a bar that played any of this), the movie does too, cause there is no movie classic with soundtrack that sucks. Even Thank God It’s Friday disco movie had an award winning song in Last Dance. Now that was a real exit.

“Visceral rather than Psychological” 2010-07-28
By John B. Ludwick (Indianapolis, IN United States)
Spoilers abound in this review. Read on if you’re ready for them.

In the comic, two detectives piece together the murder of the Comedian – we see only flashes of the event, preserving the mystery of the Comedian’s character and his killer. In the film, a 5-minute fight scene.
Rorshach, horrified by a killer’s brutality, handcuffs the killer to a stove then burns down his house. In the film, Rorshach takes a meat cleaver and repeatedly chops on him.
The Owl and Sally Jupiter begin kissing in Archie (Owl’s ship) – then, fade. In the film – a full sex scene.
Veidt kills half of New York teleporting an artificially created alien; implying that humankind has a greater threat than each other. Veidt cries over this sacrifice. In the film, Veidt kills millions upon millions all over the world and barely changes his voice. He seems more mad than calculating.

In most every scene, Director Zack Synder emphasizes the visceral thrill over the psychologically complex in Alan Moore’s Hugo-winning mystery. Do yourself a favor: read the comic instead and marvel at Alan Moore’s complex, layered writing where boyish, testosterone-ish thrills are tossed aside for penetrating character drama.
